What you need to know first

  • Every resident individual filing an income tax return in Pakistan must also file a Wealth Statement (Section 116) reconciling opening net wealth, annual inflows, personal expenses, and closing net wealth.
  • An unreconciled difference—or an unsubstantiated credit in a bank account—can be treated as unexplained income/assets under Section 111.
  • Foreign remittances, gifts from immediate family members, and disposal of assets require specific banking trail and documentary evidence.

1. The Core Wealth Reconciliation Equation

Inside FBR’s IRIS portal, your Wealth Statement must balance to zero un-reconciled difference. In plain terms, the equation is:

  • Opening Net Wealth (as of July 1) + Declared Taxable & Exempt Inflows + Non-Income Capital Receipts (e.g., sale of asset, loan received, encashed investments)
  • Minus: Personal & Household Expenses + Capital Outflows (new assets purchased, loans repaid, gifts given)
  • Equals: Closing Net Wealth (as of June 30).

2. Avoiding Common Section 111 Pitfalls

Most FBR audit notices arise not from complex tax law disputes, but from missing paper trails for routine family or asset transactions:

  • Family Gifts: Under Section 39(3), gifts must come from recognized relatives (e.g., parents, spouse, siblings, lineal ascendants/descendants) and must move through crossed banking instruments.
  • Foreign Remittances: Under Section 111(4), keep the official Bank Encashment / Proceeds Realization Certificate (PRC) showing foreign exchange remitted through normal banking channels.
  • Cash Withdrawals vs. Household Expense: Ensure declared personal expenses reasonably reflect actual bank cash withdrawals and utility/education spend.
In Practice

Practical Rule: Reconcile your July 1 to June 30 bank statements line-by-line before submitting your IRIS return—never estimate closing bank balances.
